Powerline Communication Workshop

Date/time: June 26, 2014, 11 a.m.

Location: Vienna University of Technology, Seminarraum FG, Floragasse 7, A-1040 Vienna
Contact: Gert Holler
The workshop is organized Graz University of Technology (Inst. for Electrical Measurement, EMT) and Vienna University of Technology (Inst. of Sensor and Actuator Systems,  ISAS) and supported by the IEEE Section Austria and the IEEE I&M section Austrian chapter. Main topic is the new powerline communication standard IEEE 1901.2 in comparison with standards developed by several companies (e.g. in the framework of the International Telecommunication Union/ITU).
New demands on the PLC implementations originating from the European commission treating the acquired measurements as personal data that has to be protected. This generates further demands that affect not only PLC but also all types of communication media. The workshop also discusses how far required changes are included in the current PLC standards, and addresses possible future implementations of "smart metering" and "smart grid" technologies.
11:00-11:30 Channel measurement and field experience in China for Narrow‐band PLC in CENELEC A‐Band and FCC Band (Dr. Weilin Liu, China Electric Power Research Institute)
11:45-12:30 Narrow‐band PLC systems for the FCC band in Europe: G3 and IEEE P1901.2 (Prof. Dr. Jose Antonio Cortes Arrabal, Atmel)
13:00-13:30 Positive Praxiserfahrung mit IP‐Kommunikationsinfrastrukturen über PLC im Frequenzband 150–500kHz (Walter Krott, Devolo)
13:45-14:30 Status Quo bei Narrow‐Band PLC und Auswirkungen auf das Design von Smart Metering und Smart Grids (Prof. Dr. Ing Gerd Bumiller, University of Applied Sciences, Bottrup)
14:45-15:30 Advanved End to End IP‐based Communication Infrastructure for Smart Metering and Smart Grid Applications (Patrik Grossetete, Cisco)
15:45-16:30 Discussion & Closing/Outlook
