Patent Number & Issued Date
US Patent Number 9,422,803, August 23, 2016

Inventor Names

*indicates IMS member

Abstract
A method of drilling a well is disclosed. A first estimate is obtained of a location of the well with respect to a reference well at a selected depth. A magnetic measurement is related to a residual magnetic charge distribution in the reference well. An expected value of the magnetic measurement at the selected depth is determined from the residual magnetic charge distribution. A second estimate is obtained of the location of the well using the first estimate of the location, the obtained magnetic measurement and the expected value of the magnetic measurement. A drilling parameter of the well is altered using the second estimate of the location.

Abstract
Wideband synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging. A probe transmits a signal through its aperture incident to an object located in a medium of interest remotely from the probe. Inventor Names

*indicates IMS member

Abstract
A needle-free transdermal transport device for transferring a substance across a surface of a biological body includes a reservoir for storing the substance, a nozzle in fluid communication with the reservoir and a controllable electromagnetic actuator in communication with the reservoir. The actuator, referred to as a Lorentz force actuator, includes a stationary magnet assembly and a moving coil assembly. The coil assembly moves a piston having an end portion positioned within the reservoir. The actuator receives an electrical input and generates in response a corresponding force acting on the piston and causing a needle-free transfer of the substance between the reservoir and the biological body. The magnitude, direction and duration of the force are dynamically controlled (e.g., servo-controlled) by the electrical input and can be altered during the course of an actuation cycle. Beneficially, the actuator can be moved in different directions according to the electrical input.

Patent Title
Measurement While Drilling Spontaneous Potential Indicator Using Differential Magnetometers

Patent Number & Issued Date
US 9,411,065 Aug. 9, 2016

Inventor Names
Robert A. Estes*

*indicates IMS member

Abstract
A drilling system, method and drilling apparatus for determining a parameter of a formation at a downhole location is disclosed. A member having a longitudinal axis is disposed in a borehole at the downhole location. A first magnetometer and a second magnetometer are disposed at an axial location of the member as separate azimuthal locations around the member and oriented tangential to a circumference of circle in a plane transverse to a longitudinal axis of the member. Magnetic fields resulting from a current flowing longitudinally through the member due to a spontaneous potential in the formation are measured to determine the spontaneous potential. The parameter of the formation is determined from the determined spontaneous potential.

Inventor Names
Robert H. Flake* and John F. Biskup

*indicates IMS member

Abstract
Systems and methods are described for transmitting a waveform having a controllable attenuation and propagation velocity. An exemplary method comprises: generating an exponential waveform, the exponential waveform (a) being characterized by the equation Vin=D*exp{−Asd(x−vsd*t)}, where D is a magnitude, Vin is a voltage, t is time, Asd is an attenuation coefficient, and Vsd is a propagation velocity; and (b) being truncated at a maximum value. An exemplary apparatus comprises: an exponential waveform generator; an input recorder coupled to an output of the exponential waveform generator; a transmission line under test coupled to the output of the exponential waveform generator; an output recorder coupled to the transmission line under test; an additional transmission line coupled to the transmission line under test; and a termination impedance coupled to the additional transmission line and to a ground.

Patent Title
Time synchronization and controlled asynchronization of remote trigger signals

Patent Number & Issued Date
US9331842 issued 2016-05-03

Inventor Names
Robert H. Flake*

*indicates IMS member

Abstract
A mechanism is disclosed for transmitting pulses onto respective cables so that the pulses arrive at the remote ends of the respective cables in synchronized (or controllably asynchronized) fashion. First, the round-trip time of flight of each cable is measured using speedy delivery pulses, i.e., pulses whose leading edges have exponential shape. Second, a calculation is performed to determine the input delay(s) between the pulses that would produce desired output delay(s). For example, it may be desirable that the pulses arrive at the respective remote ends at the same time, in which case the desired output delay(s) is (are) zero. Third, the same speedy delivery pulses are transmitted onto the respective cables so that the interpulse delay(s) conform to the computed input delay(s). Thus, the desired output delay(s) are achieved at the remote ends of the cables.

Patent Title
Three-Dimensaional Holographical Imaging

Patent Number & Issued Date
Australian Patent Application No. 2013337368, Issued on September 22, 2016

Inventor Names
Mohammad Tayeb Ghasr*, and Reza Zoughi*

*indicates IMS member

Abstract
A holographic imaging system including a transmission line coupled to an antenna at one end and to a signal source at another end. The antenna defines an aperture through which a signal generated by the signal source is transmitted incident to an object located remotely from the aperture and through which a signal reflected from the object is received by the antenna aperture. A standing wave probe phase-referenced to the antenna aperture samples the reflected signal. A detector connected to the standing wave probe receives the sampled reflected signal and provides an output signal that represents a real-valued signal proportional to an in-phase component of the reflected signal from the object. A processor executes an imaging algorithm for generating a multi-dimen sional profile representative of the object based on the output signal from the detector.

Abstract
An open-ended waveguide probe including a finite flange extending outwardly and functioning as an infinite flange.
