Welcome to the Instrumentation & Measurement Society |
President's Message
Dear Colleague,
Welcome to the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society's website. The society strives to make it current and useful to you.
Instrumentation and measurement is a part of all scientific and engineering endeavors. The theory and application of measurement involves sensing phenomena, processing signals and data, and interpreting information. Consequently, the Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS) encounters issues, concerns, and challenges in many different fields. A small sampling of those fields include medical research and devices, power generation and distribution, manufacturing, process control, communications, transportation, space flight, quantum physics, and astronomy.
Dr. H. James Harrington said in 1991, "If you cannot measure it, you cannot control it. If you cannot control it, you cannot manage it. If you cannot manage it, you cannot improve it." The implied conclusion is - if you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it.
The goal of IMS is to aid you in your field of interest. This website is one component of the effort by IMS to help you. If there is some way this site can better serve you, let me know. Hopefully, together we can advance measurement and ultimately advance science and engineering.
“To measure is to know.” (Lord Kelvin)

I&M Society Field of Interest |
|
The Field of Interest of the Instrumentation and Measurement Society encompasses measurement systems and science. The Society seeks to advance knowledge:
- in the theory, methodology, and practice of measurement, including, but not limited to, primary metrology, measurement uncertainty, and traceability;
- in the design, development and evaluation of measurement systems, or any of their components, involved in generating, acquiring, conditioning and processing signals for the purpose of measuring quantities and phenomena of interest;
- in the analysis, representation, display, and preservation of the information obtained from a set of measurements so as to best meet the needs of the end-user, whether human or machine; and
- through the establishment and maintenance of related technical standards.

Tutorial Video Clips on IMS Website Reza Zoughi, Chair, IMS Education Committee
The I&M Society’s website, http://www.ieee-ims.org/evts, is now hosting short tutorial video clips for: • Undergraduate students and faculty; • Graduate students and faculty; • Practitioners in IMS-related areas; • Practitioners/hobbyists in non-IMS-related areas. A distinguished cadre of experts from academia, industry and graduate schools will present these tutorials. In addition to the actual video-clip, the web portal will feature • The presence of affinity links to related topics and categories to maximize the availability of existing and future IMS content; • Social networking links (e.g. e-mail this, blog this) to provide links to the IMS community. The video clips will be available for a nominal fee for IMS members; will be competitively priced for others; and free to student members.
