President's Message

Dear Colleague,

Welcome to the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society's website. The society strives to make it current and useful to you.

Instrumentation and measurement is a part of all scientific and engineering endeavors. The theory and application of measurement involves sensing phenomena, processing signals and data, and interpreting information. Consequently, the Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS) encounters issues, concerns, and challenges in many different fields. A small sampling of those fields include medical research and devices, power generation and distribution, manufacturing, process control, communications, transportation, space flight, quantum physics, and astronomy.

Dr. H. James Harrington said in 1991, "If you cannot measure it, you cannot control it. If you cannot control it, you cannot manage it. If you cannot manage it, you cannot improve it." The implied conclusion is - if you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it.

The goal of IMS is to aid you in your field of interest. This website is one component of the effort by IMS to help you. If there is some way this site can better serve you, let me know. Hopefully, together we can advance measurement and ultimately advance science and engineering.
