International Student Contest
To inspire and engage the younger generations in exploring the field of instrumentation and measurement.
$3,000 USD for 1st prize, $2,000 USD for 2nd prize, and $1,000 USD for third prize, a certificate to all team members and the mentor.
A travel allowance of up to $5,000 USD per team can be granted for costs associated with travel support to the final competition venue.
This award is founded by the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society.
Recognition of the finalists and award winners will be announced at the annual I²MTC Conference Awards Ceremony.
The Evaluation Committee will review the proposal submitted based on the application package and the presentation at the Conference using the following criteria:
- Novelty
- Potential Impact
- Quality of the Live Demo and Poster
- Cost Analysis of the Proposed System
Teams of undergraduate, master’s, or PhD students may participate. Each team may include from one to four members and must designate a faculty member from a university to serve as mentor and primary contact with the Evaluation Committee.
Teams may qualify for the final stage of the competition through one of the following two pathways:
Local (Student) Chapter Contest (hereafter referred to as Local), or Self-Registration (hereafter referred to as Self-Register).
- Local (Student) Chapter Contest
(a) Each IMS Chapter shall select a winner through a local student contest conducted among multiple competing teams.
(b) Winners of the Local Student Contests shall be eligible for consideration to advance to the final stage of the competition, subject to the number of slots allocated annually to Local teams by the Society.
(c) The specific schedule and deadlines for the Local Student Contest are determined and announced annually by the Society.
(d) Each Local (Student) Chapter shall issue an official Certificate endorsing the winning team’s eligibility to participate in the final stage of the competition.
(e) If a local contest winner fails to comply with 1(a) or does not submit the required Certificate, the team shall be classified as a Self-Register entrant and shall be subject to the proposal selection process applicable to Self-Register teams. - Self-Registration
(a) Students are eligible to participate in the student contest even if they do not take part in a Local (Student) Chapter Contest or if no Chapter exists to organize a local contest. Teams that participated in a Local (Student) Chapter Contest but were not selected as winners by the Chapter are not eligible to qualify for the final stage through the Self-Registration process.
Local and Self-Register teams shall submit a complete application package through the call on the IMS website.
If the number of Local teams applying does not reach the allocated quota, the remaining slots may be reassigned to Self-Register teams.
If the number of Local teams exceeds the allocated quota, the evaluation committee shall rank the Local teams; those ranked within the allocated quota shall be selected as Local representatives, while any remaining Local teams shall be included in the Self-Register pool and may still be considered for selection to the final stage.
Eligibility and Selection process shall comply with procedures and regulation established in IEEE and Society/Council governing documents, particularly with IEEE Policy 4.4 on Awards Limitations.
Previous award winners are not eligible for substantially the same achievements (per IEEE Policies 4.4: An individual shall receive only one award for a given achievement, unless the significance merits a higher award, which may be given in the following year or thereafter.)
Applications are open to all teams, provided that all members are university students, through an application form on the IMS website. Self-nominations are permitted.
The following documents must be submitted as part of the application package:
- A technical description of the proposal;
- A resume of the team members;
- A presentation letter, signed by the mentor, to confirm that the University laboratories were available to support the development of the instrumentation and/or measurement methodologies.
- A signed commitment letter stating that at least one of the team members will attend the live demo session at the IEEE I2MTC venue.
Local teams are required to submit a certificate, issued by their respective (Student) Chapter, formally endorsing the winner for participation in the final stage.
Local and Self-Register teams shall submit a complete application package to the Evaluation Committee.
Nominations should comply with IEEE Policies and restrictions on awards. Incidents of misconduct including, but not limited to, violations of IEEE's publication policies, will be strongly considered by the awards committee and may be grounds for denial of an award or leadership position.
