IEEE I&M Graduate Fellowship Award
To support and encourage graduate-level research in the area of Instrumentation and Measurement.
Total yearly award budget of $120,000; Maximum of $20,000 per fellowship award winner. Award certificate to each selected applicant. Complimentary Instrumentation and Measurement (I&M) Student Membership starting in September of the Grant year and including two subsequent years.

Grant recipients will be announced at the annual I²MTC Conference Awards Banquet. Formal notification of the grant will be sent to the recipients, department, and university administrators in May (of the award year).
The awards committee will review and evaluate in detail with special attention to the clarity, impact and relevance of the nomination, the profile of the candidate, the impact and relevance of the project to the areas of interest of the I&M Society and the budget for the project.
The awardees must state to undertake the following obligations:
- Submit a budget summary and a short (no more than 2 single-spaced pages) progress report by February 1 of the award year. This budget must be audited and approved by the Selection Committee Chair.
- Submit a written report, suitable for publication in the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement as a regular or short paper (commensurate with the level of effort and fellowship funding), no later than 24 months following the initiation of the fellowship
Candidate must be a graduate student and at minimum an IEEE member. Candidate’s advisor must be a member of the IEEE and the I&M Society. Candidate must have at least one full academic year remaining to be completed at the time the award is made. Both Candidate and Advisor must exhibit actions that reflect positively on and enhance the reputation of the I&M Society.
Previous award recipients are not eligible for a period of two years after receiving the Fellowship. Previous grant recipients must be working towards a different degree to be eligible for another Fellowship. Previous award winners are not eligible for substantially the same achievements (per IEEE Policies 4.4: An individual shall receive only one award for a given achievement unless the significance merits a higher award, which may be given in the following year or thereafter.) The Eligibility and Selection process shall comply with procedures and regulations established in IEEE and Society/Council governing documents, particularly with IEEE Policy 4.4 on Awards Limitations.

Any variation during the timeframe of the grant support should be discussed/approved by the committee chair.
Nominee Solicitation
Nominations are solicited from all IMS Members. The call for nominations will be sent out via email to the IMS Membership, posted on the IMS social media accounts, and displayed on the IMS website. Nominations must be submitted through the IMS website. The nominator must be the candidate’s advisor, as well as a member of the IEEE and the I&M Society. No more than one nomination per award year per graduate advisor will be considered. Self-nominations are not permitted. Nominations should comply with IEEE Policies and restrictions on awards. Incidents of misconduct including, but not limited to, violations of IEEE's publication policies, will be strongly considered by the awards committee and may be grounds for denial of an award or leadership position.
Nominations must include the following supporting documentation:
Candidate Profile and Letters of Support
- One-page biographical summary of the candidate. Include the student’s IEEE membership number.
- Unofficial copy of the candidate’s transcript signed by the Advisor to certify authenticity. Include an explanation if the grading system differs from the A to F format.
- One page (single-spaced) statement, written by the candidate, outlining the education and research goals and accomplishments. This can include summer internship experience, undergraduate, and graduate work.
- Nominating letter from candidate’s graduate advisor.
- 2-page maximum professional/academic summary CV of the graduate advisor. Include the advisor’s IEEE membership number.
- Two letters of recommendation from someone (other than the nominator) familiar with the candidate’s research and education qualifications.
- A Letter of Support from the faculty member’s department/institution administrator with an explicit statement stating that no institutional indirect cost (of any type) will be assessed by the recipient’s institution;
- Additional Reference Letters or Support Letters may be included but are not required.
Research Proposal and Budget for the Fellowship
- Research proposal, no more than 5 single-spaced pages, that specifically provides the following information:
- Title page containing the title, University name, and contact information of the faculty member submitting the nominating package and the candidate. Include email addresses and phone numbers.
- Research proposal describing the work to be completed by the application. Objectives, approach, and estimated start and completion dates should be included.
- The anticipated type of paper (short or full) for the final report must be identified. Any variation during the timeframe of the fellowship support should be discussed/approved by the committee chair.
- Budget for the project. Explicitly outline how the funds from this Fellowship will be allocated with a line-item budget justification. Budgets must follow the guidelines below:
- No portion of the budget can provide faculty salary or any expenditure unrelated to the fellowship.
- Up to $2,000 can be included in the project budget for the recipient to attend I2MTC. Travel to other conferences, symposia, workshops, etc. is not supported by funding from this award. Any other travel requests must be explicitly justified in your budget.
- The use of project funds for travel expenses or conference fees must follow IEEE Policies and Procedures.
