The I&M Society has representation on other IEEE Societies, Boards, Councils, and Committees, as well as on entities in other organizations outside IEEE. Society Representatives and Directed Delegates serve as a bridge between the Society and other entities and enable collaboration that serves the mission, goals, and objectives of the Society. The general responsibility of each representative or delegate to another professional organization is to provide a two-way information flow between the I&M Society and another professional entity.

Biography

Sergio Rapuano achieved the MS degree in Electronic Engineering with honors in 1999 and the PhD degree in Computer Science, Applied Electromagnetism and Telecommunications in 2003 from University of Salerno, Italy.

In 2002 he joined the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Sannio, where he currently is Associate Professor of Electric and Electronic Measurement at the Department of Engineering.

He is senior member of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society and member of the IEEE Standards Association. In particular, within the Instrumentation and Measurement Society he is: Chapter Chair liaison, member of the “Waveform Generation, Measurement and Analysis” Technical Committee (TC-10), chairing the Subcommittee on “Jitter Measurement”; member of the Technical Committee on “Education for Instrumentation and Measurement” (TC-23); vice-chairman of the Subcommittee on Objective Blood Pressure Measurement formed within the Technical Committee on “Medical and Biological Measurements” (TC-25), secretary of the TC-25.

Since 2003 he participated in the organisation of several international scientific meetings in the field of Electronic Measurements: the IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technical Conferences, the International Measurement Confederation (IMEKO) TC-4 Symposia, the IEEE International Workshops on Medical Measurements and Applications, the IMEKO International Workshops on Analog to Digital Converters Modelling and Testing, playing different roles: session chairman, member of the technical program committee, technical co-chairman, general co-chairman.

He published more than 150 papers in international journals and in national and international conference proceedings on the following subjects: ADC and DAC Modelling and Testing, Digital Signal Processing, Distributed Measurement Systems, Medical Measurement and has been guest editor of the following journals: IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, Measurement, Computer Standards and Interfaces and International Journal of Advanced Media and Communications.

He received from the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society the Outstanding Young Engineer Award 2007.

Biography

Juan Manuel Ramirez Cortés was born in Puebla, Mexico. He received the B.Sc. degree from the National Politechnique Institute, Mexico, the M.Sc. degree from the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics (INAOE), and the Ph.D. degree from Texas Tech University, all in electrical engineering. Since 2007 he is at the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics, Mexico, with a current appointment as titular researcher “C”. He has served at INAOE in administrative positions as Academic Representative, Coordinator of the Electronics Department (2015-2016), and Research Director (2016-2017). He is currently member of the National Research System (SNI), level 2. From 1992 to 2007 he was with Universidad de las Americas-Puebla, Mexico, in several academic and administrative positions: faculty member, Graduate advisor, Chair of the Electrical Engineering Department, Dean of the Engineering School, and University Academic Secretary. From 2002 to 2004 he was president of the National Association of Engineering Schools (ANFEI-MEXICO), and president of the Iberoamerican Association of Academic Engineering Institutions (ASIBEI). In 2006 he received an honorary appointment from Texas Tech University as Academy Member of the Electrical and Computing Engineering Department. He is a senior member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering), past president of IEEE Puebla Section, and founder Chair of the IEEE I&MS Puebla Chapter. IIn the last years he has been member of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society Administrative Committee in several positions: Treasurer, Finance VP, President, and current Jr. Past-President. His scientific production to date consists of 56 refereed papers in scientific journals, 10 book chapters, and 150 papers in-extenso in proceedings of international conferences. He has been reviewer in several conferences and research journals, and project evaluator as RCEA member for CONACYT, Mexico. His research areas include signal and image processing, pattern recognition, neural networks, computer vision, instrumentation and sensors.

Emil M. Petriu, P.Eng. F'IEEE, F'CAE, F'EIC is a Professor and University Research Chair in the School of Information Technology (SITE), University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
He received his Dr. Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Timisoara, Romania, in 1978. In 1979, he held a UNESCO postdoctoral scholarship in the Department of Applied Physics at the Technical University of Delft, The Netherlands. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, Canada.
Since 1985, Dr. Petriu has been a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and then SITE, University of Ottawa, and has served as Chairman of the former from 1995 to 1997 and as Director of SITE from 1998 to 2001.
On half year sabbatical leaves, he was visiting researcher at the Canadian Space Agency (1992), visiting professor at the Research Institute of Electronics, Shizuoka University, Hamamatsu, Japan (1994), visiting researcher at the Communications Research Centre, Ottawa (2002), visiting professor at the Institute of Electrical Measurement and Measurement Signal Processing, Graz University of Technology, Austria (2003), and visiting researcher at the Larus Technologies, Ottawa (2006),
Dr. Petriu has published 90 refereed journal papers, 10 book chapters, 220 papers in refereed conference proceedings, authored two books, edited two books, and received two patents.
He has supervised 72 graduate students (25 PhD, 47 Master’s), 5 post-doctoral fellows and 18 research engineers.
Dr. Petriu served as a member of the Administrative Committee (1996-2005) and Vice-President (2000-2002) of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society. He served as Chair of the IEEE Joseph F. Keithley Award Committee (2007-present) and member of the IEEE Technical Field Awards Council(2007-present). He is serving as Chair of theTC-15 on Virtual Systems In Measurements,Co-Chair of theTC-30 Security and Contraband Detection of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society,and Chair of the Virtual Reality Task Force of the Intelligent Systems Applications Technical Committee of theIEEE Computational Intelligence Society.
He has been actively involved in the organization of many international conferences, symposia and workshops. He received the 2003 IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society Technical Award "for contributions to imaging processing systems, robotics, virtual reality and applications of artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic and neural networks." He was a co-recipient of the 2003 IEEE Donald G. Fink Prize Paper Award, the unique paper award presented by IEEE in that year.

Dr. Voicu Groza received the Dipl. Eng. in Computer Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Timisoara, Romania in 1972. He received the Dr. Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering from the same institution in 1985. His faculty career began in 1979 at the Polytechnic Institute of Timisoara where he became Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering and Dean of the Faculty of Automation and Computers. After brief assignments as visiting and part-time faculty at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (Zürich, Switzerland) and Sheridan College, (Toronto, Canada), Dr. Groza joined the faculty of the University of Ottawa where he is presently Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Computer Engineering Program in the School of Information Technology and Engineering. He is author or co-author of more than 200 refereed articles in journals and conference proceedings, author of two books, and holds two patents. His publications reflect his two dominant research interests, which are high-speed data acquisition and dynamically reconfigurable embedded systems.

Dr. Groza is active in the IEEE in a number of different capacities and societies. Within in the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, he has been General Chair and Technical Program Co-Chair of several workshops and symposia. He is a member of the I&M Society’s AdCom and Chair of the AdCom’s Conferences Finance Committee, and is a member of the I&M Magazine’s editorial board. He is also a member of the IEEE’s Computational Intelligence Society, the IEEE Standards Association, and the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario.

Olfa Kanoun is professor for measurement and sensor technology since 2007 at TU Chemnitz, Germany. She graduated in electrical engineering at the Technische Universität München from in 1996, where she specialized in the field of electronics. Her PhD at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich was awarded in 2001 by the Commission of Professors in Metrology (AHMT e. V.) in Germany.

In 2015 she was awarded by the Tunisian ministry of social affairs for her scientific excellence and outstanding achievements.In her research she focuses on sensors, measurement systems and measurement methods. Since 2001 she is developing new sensors and measurement solutions based on impedance spectroscopy in the fields of battery diagnosis, bio-impedance spectroscopy, inductive sensors, capacitive sensors, conductivity sensors and material testing. She has a deep expertize in the field of energy harvesting and energy transmission and develops since many years successfully flexible nanocomposite sensors for force, temperature and humidity measurements.

As senior IEEE member, she volunteers for the Instrumentation and Measurement Society and for IEEE. In 2004 she founded an IEEE IM Chapter and in 2014 she initiated a student branch at TU Chemnitz. She serves as co-chair of the Technical Committee on nanotechnology in instrumentation and measurement (TC 34). In 2001 she was co-founder of the international multi-conference on systems, signals and devices (SSD) and in 2008 she initiated the annual International Workshop on Impedance Spectroscopy (IWIS).

She is author or co-author of 7 books, 52 papers in international journals with peer review, 110 papers in proceedings of international conferences and 6 journal special issues. Ruth Dyer earned her doctorate in mechanical engineering from the University of Kentucky, and her bachelor's and master's degrees in biochemistry are from Kansas State University. She joined K-State in 1983 as an assistant professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering and was promoted to full professor in 1997. From 1998 up to her recent retirement, Dr. Dyer served in various administrative roles in the Office of the Provost. In her final, role she served as the senior vice provost for academic affairs.

She has served in a number of leadership roles in the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS), including Sr. Past President (2020-2021); Awards Chair (2020-2021), Jr. Past President (2018-2019), Nominations & Appointments Chair (2018-2019), President (2016-2017), Vice President for Membership, Vice President for Publications, Vice President for Finance, and Executive Vice President. She is a Fellow of the IEEE, and in 2011 she received the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society's Distinguished Service Award. She served as the General Program Co-Chair for the 2010 I2MTC and as the Technical Program Co-Chair for the 2011 I2MTC. She also served for a number of years as a member of the I2MTC Board of Directors. She served three four-year terms — 1999-2002, 2003-2006, and 2008-2011— as an elected member of the IMS Administrative Committee.

Dr. Dyer also was one of seven individuals from across the United States to be named a Fellow of the Association of Women in Sciences in 2006. She was an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow in 2003-2004 and served during that time at Ohio State University. In 2013, she was selected for induction into the University of Kentucky (UK) College of Engineering Hall of Distinction, and she currently serves on the UK Engineering Dean’s Advisory Council.

Biography

Carlo Trigona presently serves as an Associate Professor of Electronic Instrumentation and Measurements at the University of Catania, Italy, within the Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Computer Engineering (DIEEI). His academic journey began with the attainment of an M.S. degree (cum Laude) in Automation Engineering and Control of Complex Systems from the University of Catania in 2006. Continuing his pursuit, he embarked on his Ph.D. studies at the same university from 2006 to 2009, culminating in the achievement of a Ph.D. degree in Electronic, Automation, and Control of Complex Systems in 2010. His post-doctoral endeavors took him across Europe. From 2010 to 2011, he served as a post-doc and lecturer at the University Montpellier II – LIRMM (France). Subsequently, he continued his post-doc and lecturer roles at DIEEI, University of Catania, from 2011 to 2017. In 2017 to 2018, he furthered his research as a post-doc at the Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany). Returning to the University of Catania, he served as an Assistant Professor of Electronic Instrumentation and Measurements at DIEEI from 2018 to 2020. Continuing his academic progression, he held the position of tenure-track Professor of Electronic Instrumentation and Measurements at the same department from 2020 to 2023. He actively engages in numerous national and international academic and engineering projects, contributing as both coordinator and partner. Additionally, he significantly impacts the Instrumentation and Measurement community through various activities, including editorial roles and serving as a reviewer for esteemed journals from 2006 up to the present. Professor Trigona has received several awards for his research endeavors, notably the 2020 IEEE I&M Outstanding Young Engineer Award for his exceptional contributions to advancing I&M concepts in sensors and transducers for energy harvesting. Regarding his research profile, Prof. Trigona's first paper surfaced in 1997, and presently, he co-authors more than 250 scientific publications with over 2200 citations. These contributions span chapters in books, papers in international journals, proceedings of international conferences, trademarks and patents. His research interests encompass sensors, transducers, MEMS, NEMS, fluxgate magnetometers, energy harvesting, as well as innovative areas such as green and biodegradable sensors and transducers based on living organisms.

Vincenzo Piuri has received his Ph.D. in computer engineering at Politecnico di Milano, Italy (1989). He has been Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano, Italy and Visiting Professor at the University of Texas at Austin and at George Mason University, USA. He is Full Professor in computer engineering (since 2000) and has been Director of the Department of Information Technology at the Università degli Studi di Milano, Italy.

His main research interests are: theory and industrial applications of neural networks, machine learning, intelligent measurement systems, signal and image processing, pattern analysis and recognition, biometrics, industrial applications, fault tolerance, digital processing architectures, embedded systems, and arithmetic architectures. Original results have been published in more than 350 papers in international journals, proceedings of international conferences, books, and book chapters.

He is Fellow of the IEEE, Distinguished Scientist of ACM, and Senior Member of INNS. He is Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Systems Journal (2013-15), and has been Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement. J. Max Cortner earned a BSEE from Iowa State University and an MSEE from the University of Minnesota. After eighteen years as a Test Engineer in defense division of Sperry Corporation, Max moved to the Cardiac Rhythm Management division of Guidant, now the CRM Division of Boston Scientific. Boston Scientific CRM manufactures medical electronics including pacemakers and defibrillators. Max is currently a Senior Fellow Engineer in Test Engineering, a group responsible for automated electronic testing of components, subassemblies and final product in manufacturing. He is a licensed Professional Engineer, a Certified Project Management Professional, and a Senior Member of IEEE. As an active member of the IEEE Twin Cities Section since 1972, Max has held offices in the Computer Society including local chapter chair and area chair. He worked with a group of activists who organized and successfully ran a five-year series of multi-week technical symposia covering hot topics such as computer graphics and artificial intelligence. Max was among the founders of the Twin Cities Chapter of the Instrument and Measurement Society. He helped organize numerous local test conferences and served as General Chair for the IMTC 1998. In 1999, he served on the committee of the IEEE Sections Congress that was held in the Twin Cities. Max was Co-Chair of I2MTC held in Minneapolis in 2013. He now serves on the Instrumentation and Measurement Society Administration Committee in the role of Education Committee Chair, I2MTC Board Chair, and Industrial Relations Subcommittee Chair.

Luca De Vito (M’10–SM’12) received the master’s (cum laude) degree in software engineering and the Ph.D. degree in information engineering from the University of Sannio, Benevento, Italy, in 2001 and 2005, respectively. His master’s thesis was on automatic classification and characterization of digitally modulated signals. He joined the Laboratory of Signal Processing and Measurement Information, University of Sannio, where he was involved in research activities. In 2008, he joined the Department of Engineering, University of Sannio, as an Assistant Professor in electric and electronic measurement. In 2013, he received the National Academic Qualification as an Associate Professor. Since 2015, he collaborates with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva, Switzerland, first as visiting scientist, and then as cooperation associate, working on magnet characterization, with the Magnetic Measurement Section (TE-MSC-MM), on diagnostics of cryogenic processes, with the Controls and Electrical Support Section (TE-CRG-CE), and on the characterization of RF cavities with the Hadron Synchrotrons Coherent effects Section (BE-ABP-HSC). Since June 2016 he is associated to the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) and collaborates to the ELI-NP (Extreme Light Infrastructure - Nuclear Physics) project.

He is Associate Editor of the ELSEVIER Measurement journal.

He is member of the IEEE since 2010, he is member of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society (IMS), of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic System Society, and of the IEEE Standards Association. He is Senior Member of the IEEE since 2012. He is Chapter Chair Liaison of the IEEE IMS.

He is member of the AFCEA and is Young President of the AFCEA Naples Charter.

Sebastian Yuri Cavalcanti Catunda graduated in electrical engineering from the Federal University of Paraíba (1993), achieved M.Sc. degree from the Federal University of Paraíba (1996) and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the Federal University of Campina Grande (2000) and École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications - ENST, Paris. He was a professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA) from 1998 to 2011. At UFMA, he chaired the Graduate Program in Electrical Engineering from 2005 to 2011. In 2011 he joined the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), at Natal, where he is currently a full professor of the Department of Computer Engineering and Automation.

With the Brazilian Society of Automation (SBA), he founded the Instrumentation Committee in 2007 and was the society’s secretary of institutional relations from 2015 to 2016. He is Senior Member of IEEE since 2013. He founded in 2013 and presided until 2017, the Joint Chapter IEEE IMS / CASS of Bahia Section. He is a titular researcher, level 1D, in the Microelectronics area of the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), and member of its Advisory Board from 2012 to 2018. His research interests focus on instrumentation and microelectronics including the topics of sensors, analog and mixed circuits, embedded systems, and data acquisition systems, in which he has published more than 120 conferences and journals papers.
