Professor Xu’s research interests include intelligent sensing, advanced imaging and dynamic process monitoring. He has devoted himself for oil-water two-phase flow measurement research for over 30 years. Professor Xu has developed a series of world leading technologies and devices for in situ measurement and monitoring of underground oil-water flows. The oil-water two-phase flow measurement approaches and devices developed by him have been widely deployed in oilfields across China for optimal management of oil field exploration, which improved single well oil yield and recovery efficiency of the whole oil field. His outstanding contributions to multiphase flow measurement bring him to be awarded the First class of the Technology Invention Award by Chinese Ministry of Education in 2019.
Professor Xu has authored or coauthored more than 400 publications in the related field. His publications have got 6866 citations and the h-index is 41 (Google Scholar). He was the most published author of IEEE Trans I&M from China and ranked the 43rd of most published authors all over the world. Professor Xu was elected as the Fellows of IEEE and CIS (China Instrument and Control Society) in 2023 and 2024, respectively. He was granted the Distinguished Young Fund by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Chang-Jiang Scholar Program Professor by the Ministry of Education, China, in 2014 and 2016, respectively. He is currently the associate Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Beihang University, the editorial board member of Measurement Science and Technology, and etc.
