Valentina Cosentino


Valentina Cosentino received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy, in 2001 and 2005, respectively. Currently she is Professor of Electrical and Electronic Measurements at University of Palermo, Department of Engineering.

Her main research activity is in the field of development of measurement methods and instrumentation for diagnosis, management and control of smart grids and power systems. The research themes include: harmonic sources detection in power systems; power, energy and power quality measurements in nonsinusoidal conditions; characterization of measurement equipment and current transducers in the presence of harmonics; arc fault detection; power line communications and measurement methods, devices and architectures for low and medium voltage smart grids applications.

She has co-authored more than 150 scientific publications, in journals, conferences proceedings, research reports for industries. She is also co-inventor of one US patent.

She has been member of the Non-Sinusoidal Situations Working Group of IEEE Power & Energy Society for the revision of the standard IEEE Std 1459-2010, “IEEE Standard Definitions for the Measurement of Electric Power Quantities Under Sinusoidal, Nonsinusoidal, Balanced, or Unbalanced Conditions”.

She is member of the IEEE–IMS Instrumentation and Measurement Society, IEEE–PES Power and Energy Society and Italian Associations AEI (Association of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) and GMEE (Association of Electrical and Electronic Measurements).

She has served as TPC member and/or reviewer for various IEEE conferences, including IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference, IEEE International Workshop on Applied Measurements.

She is reviewer for several ISI journals, including IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, IEEE Sensors Journal, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, Measurement (Elsevier).

She serves as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery (from Sept. 2018) and IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement (from June 2019).
