Biography

Kang Lee is Leader of Sensor Development and Application Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Kang has thirty some years of experience in electronic instrumentation and measurements, sensor-based measurement and control, and smart sensor standards. As IEEE Fellow, Kang is quite active in serving the Instrumentation and Measurement Society. He serves as AdCom Member for the Society and the IEEE Sensors Council. He serves as Chair of Technical Committee TC-9 that sponsors the smart sensor standards IEEE 1451 and precision clock synchronization standards IEEE 1588. Kang has served as technical program chair of IMTC 2000 and conference chair and program chair of Sensors for Industry Conferences. Kang was profiled by EE Times’s Great Mind, Great Ideas project as one of 29 innovators in the world in 2006. His area of expertise is: IEEE 1451: Empowering the Smart Sensor Revolution.

Biography

Mel did his undergraduate work at Cornell University and his graduate work, leading to the PhD under Nobel Laureate John L. Hall at the University of Colorado - Boulder. He is currently a faculty member in the Robotics Institute, School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University, where he is the founding director of the Sensors, Measurement, and Control Lab. His previous employment includes service in the US Peace Corps teaching physics and mathematics in Ghana, a post-doc at the University of Virginia, a professorship at the State University of New York - Buffalo, and an eight-year foray into industry with the specialty mass spectrometer system manufacturer Extrel, where he directed research, development, and applications. At the Robotics Institute he and his students and colleagues conduct research at all levels of sensor and measurement science, from devices to instruments to systems to advanced sensor fusion software. His interest in the human-machine interaction aspect of robotics led also to substantial contributions to the field of three dimensional display systems, including innovations for which several patents have been issued. At the robotics theory level, Mel has recently been studying energy and communication scaling issues, focusing especially on systems made up of very large numbers of very small sensor-carrying robots. In addition to teaching courses in Sensing and Sensors regularly and Electromechanical Systems occasionally, Mel runs a professional masters degree program – Master of Science in Information Technology / Robotics Technology – with a distance education component that is part of Carnegie Mellon’s internationalization effort. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Biography

R. Zoughi received his B.S.E.E, M.S.E.E, and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering (radar remote sensing, radar systems, and microwaves) from the University of Kansas where from 1981 until 1987 he was at the Radar Systems and Remote Sensing Laboratory (RSL). He is the Kirby Gray (Battelle) Chair in Engineering and a Professor Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECpE) at Iowa State University (ISU). He is also the Director of Center for Nondestructive Evaluation (CNDE) at ISU. He served as the Schlumberger Endowed Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) from January 2001 to August 2019. Prior to joining Missouri S&T and since 1987 he was with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Colorado State University (CSU). He is the recipient of the 2007 IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society Distinguished Service Award, the 2009 American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Research Award for Sustained Excellence, the 2011 IEEE Joseph F. Keithley Award in Instrumentation and Measurement and the 2020 IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society Career Excellence Award. In 2013 and 2020 he and his co-authors received the H. A. Wheeler Applications Prize Paper Award from the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (APS). He is also the recipient of the 2023 American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Lester/Mehl Honor Lecture Award. He has twenty issued US patents to his credit (in addition to several issued abroad). He has served the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society and the IEEE in various capacities.
