The Supportive Smart Home: Solutions Enabling Independence - Ambient Sensing, Artificial Intelligence in Ethical Context

Smart Home Technology is widely available and we use it in our day to  day lives. This tutorial will explore a new concept, the Supportive Smart Home, bringing together research on ambient assisted living with smart home technology solutions focused on further supporting the ongoing well-being and independence of older adults. The tutorial will explore the needs of older adults through consideration of personas developed with clinicians with expertise in care of the elderly.  The tutorial will explore various aspects of ethics, privacy, data ownership and data communications that must be considered for all of the technology solutions. Within this context ambient sensing solutions that are emerging for use, under research and gaps still to be addressed will be presented to provide supportive smart home solutions to address the many and varied needs of older adults.
