Content and Submission Guidelines

Please note that you are submitting to Instrumentation and Measurement Magazine (I&MM), which has the goal of providing readable introductions and overviews of methodologies, technologies and applications in the field of Instrumentation and Measurement (IM) to a wide engineering audience. Articles submitted to the Magazine are expected to address open problems and challenging topics in the IM framework.

In an article, Authors must acknowledge intellectual content generated by an AI tool, including text, images, videos, audio signals, graphics, and computer code. An AI tool may be used to improve the language of human-generated text in an article without acknowledgment if the tool does not change the meaning or add new intellectual content to the text. Data generated by an AI tool to simulate or emulate a process must be clearly labeled as generated by AI. For articles where an AI tool is the subject, it is recommended that the source code and curated data be made available.

All articles should follow the formatting guidelines in the IEEE-Template Selector for the Magazine.

Scope

The article must be contextualized and framed within the field of Instrumentation and Measurement (I&M). For the benefit of our first-time authors whose primary field might not be Instrumentation & Measurement (I&M), below are some topical guides that explain how research in certain related fields should be properly presented in an I&M context, such that the resulting paper will be within scope:

Please familiarize yourself with and strictly follow relevant IEEE policies in the IEEE Publication Services and Products Board Operations Manual (PSPB Manual), in particular, Sections 8.2.1A (Authorship), 8.2.1.B (Responsibilities of Authors), 6.3.1 + 8.1.4 (Copyright), and 8.2.4 (Author misconduct and plagiarism.

Please take very seriously author misconduct and plagiarism. Particularly, the use of content generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) shall be identified and accompanied by a brief explanation regarding the level at which the AI system was used to generate the content. The use of AI systems for editing and grammar enhancement is common practice and, as such, is generally outside the intent of the above policy. In this case, disclosure as noted above is recommended.

IEEE Publishing Ethics

Please strictly follow the Ethical Requirements, including the definition of authorship, the appropriate citation of sources, the accurate reporting of data, and the publishing of original research.

Tutorial

1. The tutorial topic must be explicitly specified, together with its objectives and background to provide the appropriate context for the reader. The introduction in a tutorial article should identify its readers and be presented at a level appropriate to that identification.
2. A tutorial article should not exceed 10 References. These references should be intended to provide the reader with additional appropriate reading for a specific concept to be studied deeper. They must, thus, be carefully selected for further reading, as opposed to comprehensive referencing
3. The tutorial should be instructive to allow readers to become familiar with the chosen topic, or to learn something specific within the chosen topic (i.e. specific methodology, standard, toolbox, model etc.).
4. Mathematical equations should be minimally used and only presented if they are critical to the topic.
5. Authors of tutorial articles are highly encouraged to link their tutorial to other resources such as toolboxes, software etc. to increase the value of the tutorial to its readers
6. Tutorial articles should be no more than 3,500 words, including tables.
7. Please do not exceed 6 figures for a tutorial article.
8. Please include a 3-4 line bio for each author after the References.
9. If the paper has no references, please supply three “For Further Reading” sources. These should be added at the end of the article and be in the format for references but do not need to be cited in the text and are not numbered.

Short Review/Roadmap

1. A Review/Roadmap article is intended to provide the reader with the history/foundation of the selected topic, development, key milestones and impacts, current state, and future of the topic area.
2. The article should review the State-of-the-Art and related works, discussing main open issues related to the subject, maybe providing a brief case of study.
3. Mathematical equations are not encouraged unless absolutely critical to the review.
4. References should be carefully chosen to represent the authoritative citations only and should be kept to no more than 20 references. These should be readings suitable for a general technical audience.
5. Review/Roadmap articles should be no more than 5,000 words, including tables
6. The article should be limited to a maximum of 6 figures.
7. Please include a 3-4 line bio for each author after the References. 

Short Scientific Communication

1. A Short Scientific Communication paper is strictly limited to 3,500 words, a maximum of 6 figures, and a maximum of 10 references
2. The article must highlight a specific need or issue to be solved, and propose a NEW solution
3. The article must have a short review of the State-of-the-Art (SOTA), and clear statements related to main novelties coming from the proposed strategy and advantages against the SOTA
4. The article should contain a summary of the proposed solution and main experimental results
