Biography

Kurt Barbé (S’05-M’09-SM’16) received the Master degree in Mathematics and the PhD degree in engineering from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Brussels, Belgium, in 2005 and 2009 respectively. Presently, he is a professor at the VUB at the faculty of Medicine. He is furthermore a co-founder of the research group Digital Mathematics (DIMA) holding a strong expertise in applied mathematics for engineering sciences and beyond. At VUB, he is the founder of the interfaculty centre for data-processing and statistics providing statistical and methodological support to the university community at large. Dr. Barbé is a former research fellow of the Flemish Research Foundation (FWO) and VUB-coordinator of FLAMES – the Flemish inter-university training network on research methodology and statistics. His current research interest is in the field of numerical methods and computational statistics applied to biomedicine.

Dr. Barbé has served as an Associate Editor since 2010 and Associate Editor in Chief in 2018-2019 for the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement. Since 2017 he has served as secretary of the royal Belgian statistical society. Finally, since 2019 he has joined the editorial board for the journal Fractal and Fractional as well as Sensors. He was a recipient of the Outstanding Young Engineer Award from the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society in 2011 and the Andi Chi Best Paper Award of the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement in 2013. Two PhD students received the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Graduate Fellowship award under his supervision in 2012 and 2017.

Biography

Melanie Ooi is an emerging researcher and engineering specialist in Electrical and Electronic Engineering as well as Computer Engineering and Computational Intelligence. She is currently an Associate Professor at The University of Waikato, New Zealand. While working in close collaboration with several leading multinational electronics companies, she has developed new testing techniques and test data processing methodologies that have been adopted by the industry partners. In the recent years she has also successfully researched on new measurement uncertainty evaluation approaches and frameworks with application to a multitude of science and technology areas (medical research, structural design, mechanical systems modelling, etc.). Her research competence and capability are evident from the extensive and fast growing list of publications, research grants and projects, as well as successfully supervised postgraduate students.

In addition, Associate Professor Ooi was particularly successful in the area of undergraduate and postgraduate education. She introduced several innovations and a well-structured education program enhancing key professional skills and thus increasing work-readiness and employability of engineering graduates that were successfully adopted and implemented by Monash University and RMIT University in their Southeast Asian campuses. They have been strongly supported by multinational electronics companies such as Intel, Freescale Semiconductor and National Instruments.

Her high professional achievements have been acknowledged by several prestigious awards including the Outstanding Young Engineer Award of the Year 2014 from the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, 2014 Excellence Award from the International Education Association of Australia, 2011 Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council to mention a few.

She is Senior Member of the IEEE, Member of the IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society (I&MS); I&M AdCom (2019-2022)|| Young Professional Program Representative (2018)|| Distinguished Lecturer (2016 - December 2017), Distinguished Lecturer and Secretary of the Technical Committee on Fault Tolerant Measurement Systems (TC-32) of the IEEE I&MS. She is also Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and UK Chartered Engineer.

Biography

R. Zoughi received his B.S.E.E, M.S.E.E, and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering (radar remote sensing, radar systems, and microwaves) from the University of Kansas where from 1981 until 1987 he was at the Radar Systems and Remote Sensing Laboratory (RSL). He is the Kirby Gray (Battelle) Chair in Engineering and a Professor Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECpE) at Iowa State University (ISU). He is also the Director of Center for Nondestructive Evaluation (CNDE) at ISU. He served as the Schlumberger Endowed Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) from January 2001 to August 2019. Prior to joining Missouri S&T and since 1987 he was with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Colorado State University (CSU). He is the recipient of the 2007 IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society Distinguished Service Award, the 2009 American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Research Award for Sustained Excellence, the 2011 IEEE Joseph F. Keithley Award in Instrumentation and Measurement and the 2020 IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society Career Excellence Award. In 2013 and 2020 he and his co-authors received the H. A. Wheeler Applications Prize Paper Award from the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (APS). He is also the recipient of the 2023 American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Lester/Mehl Honor Lecture Award. He has twenty issued US patents to his credit (in addition to several issued abroad). He has served the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society and the IEEE in various capacities.

Biography

Bruno Andò is currently Associate Professor in Measurement Science at the Department of Electric, Electronic and Information Engineering (DIEEI) of the University of Catania, Italy.

He received the M.S. in Electronic Engineering and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Catania, Italy, in 1994 and 1999 respectively. From 1999 he performs research in the fields of sensor and instrumentation at the DIEEI of the University of Catania.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

Bruno Andò leads a group of researchers working in the following fields:

Smart Sensing Systems and Readout Electronics;
Assistive Technologies;
Nano and Micro Sensors, µ-fluidics, Bio-Sensors;
Inkjet Printed Sensors and Flexible Sensors;
Sensors exploiting innovative materials (ferrofluids, ferroelectrics and multiferroics);
Sensor Networks;
Smart signal processing and nonlinear techniques (including stochastic resonance and dithering) to improve performances of sensors and bio-receptors.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN SCIENTIFIC SOCIETIES

Since 1997 he is member of IEEE, and since 2013 he is a Senior Member of IEEE.
He is the Chair Elected of the IEEE SAS Advisory Board, 2017-2019.
He belongs to the following Technical Committee of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society: TC-18 “Environmental Measurements”, TC-37 “Measurement and Networking” and TC-13 “Wireless & Telecommunications in Measurements”.
He is a member of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurements Faculty Course Development Award Committee for years 2016, 2017.
Since 2010 he is a member of the AitAAL (Italian Association on Ambient Assisted Living) and since 2004 he is a member of the Italian Group of Electric and Electronic Measurement “GMEE”, Italy.
Since 2015 he is the Chairman of the National Research Activity on “Sensors and Transducers for Measurement” of the Italian Measurement Group (GMEE).
He is delegated of the “Sicily (Italy) District on Micro&Nano Systems”, to the Italian Cluster on “Technology for Life Environments (TAV)”, as an expert in the field of "Technology for Assisted Living".
He belongs to the List of supporters of AALOA (AAL OPEN ASSOCIATION-www.aaloa.org/).
In 2011, 2013 he was with the Technical Program Committee of “EvAAL (Evaluating AAL Systems through Competitive Benchmarking)” competition organized by AALOpenAssociation on “Indoor Localization”, Valencia.

Biography

Prof. Shervin Shirmohammadi received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 2000 from the University of Ottawa, Canada, and after spending 3 years in the industry as a senior architect and project manager, joined as Assistant Professor the same University, where since 2012 he has been a Full Professor with the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He is Director of the Discover Laboratory, doing research in machine learning-assisted measurements, especially vision-based measurement, IoT measurements, and multimedia and network measurements. The results of his research, funded by more than $28 million from public and private sectors, have led to over 400 publications, over 70 researchers trained at the postdoctoral, PhD, and Master’s levels, 30+ patents and technology transfers to the private sector, and four Best Paper awards. He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Open Journal of Instrumentation and Measurement, was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement from 2017 to 2021, the Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Magazine in 2014 and 2015, and is currently on the latter’s editorial board. Dr. Shirmohammadi is an IEEE Fellow “for contributions to multimedia systems and network measurements”, and recipient of the 2019 George S. Glinski Award for Excellence in Research, the 2021 IEEE IMS Distinguished Service Award, and the 2023 IEEE IMS Technical Award “for contributions to the advancement of machine learning-assisted measurements”.
