TC-37: Measurements and Networking
The purpose of TC-37 is to increase awareness and interest in communications and networking and to encourage I&M Society members to apply their skills and extend their knowledge of networking and communications-related problems in the I&M application field. Given the complexity of modern networks and communication systems, a multidisciplinary approach must be followed to correctly address the technological challenges and issues that are arising and will arise in the future in the field of telecommunication systems and networking. TC-37 promotes the international cooperation and integration of researchers from the IMS with those from other telecommunication and information technology areas. Efforts are made to highlight the crucial contribution of a metrological approach within different areas of networking and communications, looking also to emerging fields like IoT, IIoT, Software Defined Radio, Software Defined Networks, Coexistence and interference problems in wireless networks, 5G and beyond-5G systems, Cybersecurity, Time synchronization, Localization, to cite a few. Therefore, TC-37 has established liaisons with other bodies in the networking and communications world, like the IP Performance Metrics working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the SIGMETRICS special interest group of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale (URSI), and the AMTA (Antenna Measurement Techniques Association). The main fields of expertise include measurement for networking, networking for measurements, measurement methods for performance assessment of network and communication interfaces, measurements in/and for IoT and testing of industrial networks, measurements for cybersecurity of devices and networks, measurements for electromagnetic compatibility and human exposure to electromagnetic fields, interfaces for measurement systems, distributed and automated measurement systems, antenna measurements for modern telecommunication systems, time synchronization for networks and systems, measurement techniques for indoor and outdoor localization. The TC cooperates with the technical committees of the IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference, and it is involved in organizing the biennial IEEE Symposium on Measurement in Networking and Communications and the IEEE Sensors Applications Symposium. Regarding the standardization activities of the IEEE, TC-37 supports Working Groups involved in the development of standards sponsored or co-sponsored by the IMS, and it is open to joint standardization activities with other international bodies such as IEC and CENELEC. The TC-37 links with other I&M technical committees, e.g., TC-13 Wireless and Telecommunications in Measurements and TC-10 Waveform Generation, Measurement & Analysis, and other IEEE societies like the Communication Society and Computer Society.
