About Us Our Mission: Provide the most comprehensive and high-quality services to our members and related professionals. Serve as the professional incubator for the growth of all (particularly younger) members. Be at the forefront of future I&M fundamental, technological, and application advances. Provide education in the field of instrumentation and measurement. The IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society is dedicated to the development and use of electrical and electronic instruments and equipment to measure, monitor and/or record physical phenomena. The fields of interest include metrology, analog and digital electronic instruments, systems and standards for measuring and recording electrical quantities (in both frequency and time domains), instrumentation and transducers for measurement of non-electrical variables, calibration and uncertainty, instruments with automated control and analysis functions, safety instrumentation, and new technology applications. With scientific, literary, and educational concerns, the Society seeks to promote a high level of technical excellence by encouraging close cooperation and exchange of information among its members. It sponsors and supports conferences and publications, and through its committees, responds to the needs of the membership. The IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society is also an active membership, sharing the same profession and interest, learning firsthand of developing technologies, and uncovering opportunities for personal professional development. Our Vision: Be the premier international professional Society in the Instrumentation and Measurement (I&M) fields. Field of Interest: The Instrumentation and Measurement Society’s Field of Interest is the science, technology, and application of instrumentation and measurement. IMS Membership Benefits IEEE Membership Catalog History The IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society is IEEE's 10th oldest Society. It was established on March 9, 1950 as the IRE Professional Group on Instrumentation. IRE was the Institute of Radio Engineers, which in 1963 merged with the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) to form the present-day IEEE. As a result of this merger, on March 25, 1963, the name was changed to IEEE Professional Technical Group on Instrumentation and Measurement, and then to IEEE Group on Instrumentation and Measurement on August 24, 1964. Finally, the name was changed to IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society on May 22, 1978.
