Emanuele Zappa (M’10, SM’21) received the Ph.D. degree in applied mechanics from Politecnico di Milano, Italy, in 2002. In 2001, he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, as a Researcher, where he is currently a full professor in Mechanical and Thermal Measurements with the School of Industrial and Information Engineering.
His research interests are mainly in the field of measurements, with a focus on vision-based techniques: digital image correlation, 3-D structured light scanning, and stereoscopy. Contributes to these research topics cover: the measuring techniques development, the corresponding applications in complex and hostile environments, as well as the qualification and reduction of the measuring uncertainty in dynamic applications. The 3D vision-based systems developed and qualified are applied also in a wide variety of other research themes, including structure dynamics analysis, helicopter blades tracking, face-based biometrics, fluid-structure interaction, 3D scanning and material characterization.
