Biography

Lucas J. Koerner (Member, IEEE) received the B.A. degree (Hons.) in integrated science, physics, and mathematics from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA, in 2003, and the Ph.D. degree in physics from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA, in 2010. At Cornell, he contributed to the design and experimental application of high-speed CMOS-based X-ray detectors. He subsequently worked in industry on optical image stabilization and other cross-functional challenges in smartphone photography.

He joined the University of St. Thomas, MN, in 2017, where he is currently an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research interests include optical sensors, SPAD-based time-of-flight imaging, computational imaging, and embedded systems for in-sensor and low-power signal processing. He is also active in developing open-source software for reproducible research and mentoring undergraduate research projects.
