Biography

Dr. Mohamed (IEEE SM’10) has had core and advanced formal education in electrical engineering focusing on applied electromagnetics and statistical signal processing. Over the years, Dr. Mohamed has devised principles of waves scattering, absorption, reflection and interaction with material structure reconciled with circuit theory to see the “unseen”. Based on these principles, he has developed several innovative inspection devices and imaging systems.

He has been actively involved in various multidisciplinary research and development projects sponsored by industry and government agencies. These projects yielded state-of-the are sensing systems and technologies to a wide range of industries including aerospace, biomedical, and Oil & Gas.

His areas of expertise include hazardous environment instrumentation, intrinsic safety systems, material characterization, nondestructive testing, smart sensors, and adaptive signal processing. He has co-authored numerous technical publications in his areas of expertise, and has to his credit many patents.

Fabricio Guimarães Baptista received B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from São Paulo State University (UNESP), Brazil, in 2006 and 2010, respectively. From 2010 to 2011, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Intelligent Material Systems and Structures (CIMSS), Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, USA, performing research in the field of structural health monitoring and piezoelectric transducers. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, UNESP, Bauru-SP, Brazil, where he coordinates the Laboratory of Transducers and Data Acquisition, working in the field of piezoelectricity, structural health monitoring, signal processing, data acquisition, and electronic instrumentation.

Valentina Bianchi (SM’19) received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees (summa cum laude) in Electronic Engineering and the Ph.D. degree from the Department of Information Engineering, University of Parma, Parma, Italy, in 2003, 2006, and 2010, respectively. From 2012 to 2017, she was a Technical Assistant with the University of Parma at the Department of Engineering and Architecture, where she is currently a Research Assistant. She participated in several national and international projects. She has authored or coauthored over 40 papers in international journals or proceedings of conferences. Her current research interests include the design and validation of wireless sensors, sensors for electrochemical applications, digital systems implemented on FPGAs, with a special focus on machine learning algorithms and arithmetic circuits.

Bruno Albuquerque de Castro is an IEEE Senior Member, and Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement Journal. He received a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering (2019) from São Paulo State University with a period at the aerospace center of the University of Surrey, United Kingdom. He is also a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering. His research field is focused on electronic circuits, digital signal processing, instrumentation, intelligent systems, sensors, acoustic emission, pattern recognition, automation, and non-destructive techniques applied to machines and structural health monitoring. Dr. Bruno was awarded as "2021-Outstanding Associate Editor” (1^st) by the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society being a reviewer of highlighted journals such as IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, Measurement Elsevier Journal, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Access, IOP Engineering Research Express, Mechanical Systems, and Signal Processing, ISA Transactions, Journal of Physics D-Applied Physics and Elsevier NDT & International. Dr. Bruno is an Assistant Professor at the São Paulo State University, Bauru Campus, Brazil.

Chi-Hung Hwang received the M.Sc. degree and the Ph.D. degree in Power Mechanical Engineering from the National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, in 1991 and 1996, respectively. Afterwards, he joined Precision Institution Development Center (PIDC) of National Science Council as an associate researcher. In 2002, he led the planning division on PIDC long-term planning. In 2003, he was elevated to be a researcher because of his achievement on system engineering of instrument. In 2004, he engaged in reorganizing PIDC from a government subsidiary organization into one of research orientated national laboratories. Afterwards, he led the division of planning & promotion division as well as the instrumentation engineering division of Instrument Technology Research Center (ITRC) of NARL. In 2008, he was assigned to be the deputy director general of ITRC; currently he is the chief technology officer of ITRC and he also leads applied optics division on the development of spectrum imaging system for bio- and semi-industry applications. Huang-Chen Lee received the Ph.D. degree from the National Tsing-Hua University, Hsin-Chu, Taiwan, in 2010. He has worked in the industry since 2000 and has a wide breadth of experience in designing personal digital assistant/cellular phones and low-power embedded systems. Dr. Lee joined the Department of Communications Engineering and Electrical Engineering at National Chung-Cheng University, Taiwan in 2011, and promoted to professor since Aug 2021. He had been elevated to IEEE senior member since 2012. Dr. Lee has been Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement in 2015, also Associate Editor of the IEEE Sensors Journal in 2017. Dr. Lee has a strong track record of collaborating with industry partners for transfer technologies from the academic research projects. His research topics are mainly related to wireless sensor, mesh networking, the internet of thing (IoT) and low-power embedded system. He received award for Outstanding Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement from 2017 to 2020, four years in a row.

Datong Liu (M’11-SM’16) is currently a Full Professor with the School of Electronics and Information Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), Harbin, China. He received his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Instrumentation Science and Technology from Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) in 2003, 2005 and 2010, respectively. During May 2013 to June 2014, he was a visiting scholar in the System and Industrial Engineering (SIE) Department, University of Arizona (UofA), Tucson, AZ, USA. Qiang Miao (M’06, SM’12) received the B.E. and M.S. degrees from the Beihang University, Beijing, China, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada, in 2005. He joined the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in 2005, and was an Adjunct Professor at the City University of Hong Kong in 2011-2012.

He is currently a Professor with the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China. He has authored more than 80 research papers. His current research interests include reliability, machinery condition monitoring and health assessment. He received the Ministry of Education Natural Science Award (Second Class) in 2009. In 2011, he was selected as the New Century Excellent Talents in University and the Reserve Candidate of Sichuan Province Academic and Technology Leadership. In 2013, he was selected as the Excellent Expert of Sichuan Province with Great Accomplishments.

Adam G. Polak received the M.Sc., Ph.D., and D.Sc. degrees in Technical Sciences from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology (WUST), Poland, in 1988, 1994 and 2008, respectively. From 1988 he has been working on the research-didactic staff at WUST. In 1992/1993 he held a fellowship from the British Council in the Centre for Measurement and Information in Medicine, City University, London. He was a recipient of the award of the Foundation for Polish Science (1995) and the scholarship “Enhancing science linkages between New Zealand and Europe through Poland” (2010). He has been cooperating with research teams from Boston University (Boston, MA), Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), The University of Auckland (New Zeeland) and Semmelweis University (Budapest, Hungary). He is a member of the Committee on Metrology and Scientific Instrumentation, Polish Academy of Sciences. His research includes: complex systems identification, indirect measurements, inverse problem solving, regularization of parameter estimation and signal reconstruction, methods for decomposition and data fusion, modeling and measurements in physiology, reconstruction of CT images, telemedicine and wireless monitoring of life signals, machine learning in disease detection and differentiation.

Seyed Hossein Hesamedin Sadeghi (M’92-SM’05) received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 1980, the M.S. degree in power engineering from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, Manchester, U.K., in 1984, and the Ph.D. degree in electronic systems engineering from the University of Essex, Colchester, U.K., in 1991. In 1992, he was appointed as a Research Assistant Professor with Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN. During 1996-1997 and 2005-2006, he was a Visiting Professor with the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He is currently a Professor of electrical engineering with Amirkabir University of Technology, Tehran, Iran. He is the holder of four patents and is the author or coauthor of one book, one book chapter and more than 300 scientific papers published in reviewed journals and international conference proceedings. His current research interests include electromagnetic nondestructive evaluation of materials and electromagnetic compatibility.

Hongrui Wang received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering and automation from the School of Electrical Engineering, Southwest Jiaotong University, Chengdu, China in 2012. In 2019, he received his Ph.D. degree in railway engineering from the Department of Engineering Structures, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, where he was a postdoc researcher until 2020 and is currently an assistant professor. Dr. Wang is a faculty member of the TU Delft AI Initiative. Emanuele Zappa (M’10, SM’21) received the Ph.D. degree in applied mechanics from Politecnico di Milano, Italy, in 2002. In 2001, he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, as a Researcher, where he is currently a full professor in Mechanical and Thermal Measurements with the School of Industrial and Information Engineering.

His research interests are mainly in the field of measurements, with a focus on vision-based techniques: digital image correlation, 3-D structured light scanning, and stereoscopy. Contributes to these research topics cover: the measuring techniques development, the corresponding applications in complex and hostile environments, as well as the qualification and reduction of the measuring uncertainty in dynamic applications. The 3D vision-based systems developed and qualified are applied also in a wide variety of other research themes, including structure dynamics analysis, helicopter blades tracking, face-based biometrics, fluid-structure interaction, 3D scanning and material characterization.
