Biography

Edward Sazonov received the Diploma of Systems Engineer from Khabarovsk State University of Technology, Russia, in 1993 and the Ph.D. degree in Computer Engineering from West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV, in 2002. Currently he is an Associate Professor in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL and the head of the Computer Laboratory of Ambient and Wearable Systems (http://claws.eng.ua.edu). His research interests span wireless, ambient and wearable devices, and methods of biomedical signal processing and pattern recognition. Devices developed in his laboratory include a highly accurate physical activity and gait monitor integrated into a shoe insole which is nearing commercialization; a wearable sensor for objective detection and characterization of food intake; a wearable sensor system for monitoring of cigarette smoking; sensor systems for early diagnosis of risk of falling in elderly and others.
His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, National Academies of Science, as well as by state agencies and private industry.

Biography

Hsi-Pin Ma received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University, Taiwan, in 1995 and 2002. At the summer of 2000, he interned at Siemens Telecommunication Systems Limited, for feasibility study and establishment of a dual-mode base station for WCDMA and cdma2000. Since 2003, he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering/Institute of Communications Engineering, National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan, where he is currently as Associate Professor.
Dr. Ma’s research interests include communications system design and SoC implementation, power efficient/energy efficient signal processing, and biomedical signal processing and system applications. He was the PI of three NSoC national programs (WCDMA/HSDPA, WiMAX, DVB-T/H), one Telecom. National program (Development of a MIMO-OFDM advanced platform), two MOEA projects (Wireless Testing/HOY, Low Power Cell Library/Starfish DSP) and many industry collaboration projects from Intel, MediaTek, Skymedi and ITRI. Recently, he has several NSC projects (PI/Co-PI) related to biomedical circuits and systems applications, including “Development of integrated electrophysiology instruments for basic research and biomedical uses”, NPIE project “Patient-centric medical environment”, NTHU-UC collaboration project “Molecular neuroscience: from basic research to translational development”, and Taiwan-France collaboration project (TecSan) “Innovating technology to characterize balance loss in ecological setting of daily life: application to Parkinson' s disease (ECOTECH)”.
Dr. Ma has published 12 journal, 58 conferences papers, and 4 US patents and other international patents. He also participated in IEEE 802.16m standard contributions with ITRI and has submitted 15 contributions. He also has three cases of technology transfer to the industries.

Biography

Lee Gonzales Fuentes was born in Arequipa, Perú. She received the Bachelor degree in Electronic Engineering with a major in Telecommunications from the Universidad Nacional de San Agustín (UNSA), Perú in 2008. Her M.Sc. degree in Electronics/Telecommunications from the University of Gävle (HIG), Sweden was received in 2012. In March 2012, Lee joined the department of Electricity and Instrumentation (ELEC) as a Ph.D. student in the domain of pre- and post-processing of measured data. Her main research interests are measurements and modeling techniques for high-frequency applications, wireless network design, telemetry and digital signal processing.

The estimation of the probability density of a measured physical variable is a very common functionality in both measurement instruments and virtual measurement systems. The relevance of this project attracted the attention of Agilent Technologies (currently Keysight Technologies) which resulted in a scientific collaboration. Several discussions regarding the different techniques and their implementation allowed the research team to apply them to different measurement problems that an engineer usually encounters.

Dr. Subhas Chandra Mukhopadhyay (M’97, SM’02, F’11) graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Jadavpur University, Calcutta, India with a Gold medal and received the Master of Electrical Engineering degree from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. He has PhD (Eng.) degree from Jadavpur University, India and Doctor of Engineering degree from Kanazawa University, Japan.

Currently, he is working as a Professor of Mechanical/Electronics Engineering with the Department of Engineering, Macquarie University, New South Wales, Australia. He is the Programme Leader of the Mechatronics Engineering Degree Programme. He has over 26 years of teaching and research experiences.

His fields of interest include Smart Sensors and Sensing Technology, Wireless Sensor Networks, Instrumentation and Measurements, Internet of Things, Environmental Measurements, Electromagnetics, Control Engineering, Mechatronics, Magnetic Bearing, Fault Current Limiter, Electrical Machines and numerical field calculation etc.

He has authored/co-authored over 400 papers in different international journals, conferences and book chapter. He has edited fifteen conference proceedings. He has also edited seventeen special issues of international journals as lead guest editor and thirty books with Springer-Verlag.

He was awarded numerous awards throughout his career and attracted over US$3.0 M on different research projects.

He has delivered 296 seminars including keynote, tutorial, invited and special seminars.

He is a Fellow of IEEE (USA), a Fellow of IET (UK) and a Fellow of IETE (India). He is a Topical Editor of IEEE Sensors Journal, and an Associate Editor IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurements. He is in the editorial board of e-Journal on Non-Destructive Testing, Sensors and Transducers, Transactions on Systems, Signals and Devices (TSSD). He is the co-Editor-in-chief of the International Journal on Smart Sensing and Intelligent Systems. He was the Technical Programme Chair of ICARA 2004, ICARA 2006 and ICARA 2009. He was the General chair/co-chair of ICST 2005, ICST 2007, IEEE ROSE 2007, IEEE EPSA 2008, ICST 2008, IEEE Sensors 2008, ICST 2010, IEEE Sensors 2010, ICST 2011, ICST 2012, ICST 2013, ICST 2014, ICST 2015 and ICST 2016. Biography

Dr. Voicu Groza received the Dipl. Eng. in Computer Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Timisoara, Romania in 1972. He received the Dr. Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering from the same institution in 1985. His faculty career began in 1979 at the Polytechnic Institute of Timisoara where he became Professor in the Department of Computer Engineering and Dean of the Faculty of Automation and Computers. After brief assignments as visiting and part-time faculty at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (Zürich, Switzerland) and Sheridan College, (Toronto, Canada), Dr. Groza joined the faculty of the University of Ottawa where he is presently Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Computer Engineering Program in the School of Information Technology and Engineering. He is author or co-author of more than 200 refereed articles in journals and conference proceedings, author of two books, and holds two patents. His publications reflect his two dominant research interests, which are high-speed data acquisition and dynamically reconfigurable embedded systems.

Dr. Groza is active in the IEEE in a number of different capacities and societies. Within in the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, he has been General Chair and Technical Program Co-Chair of several workshops and symposia. He is a member of the I&M Society’s AdCom and Chair of the AdCom’s Conferences Finance Committee, and is a member of the I&M Magazine’s editorial board. He is also a member of the IEEE’s Computational Intelligence Society, the IEEE Standards Association, and the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario.

Bruno Andò is currently Associate Professor in Measurement Science at the Department of Electric, Electronic and Information Engineering (DIEEI) of the University of Catania, Italy.

He received the M.S. in Electronic Engineering and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Catania, Italy, in 1994 and 1999 respectively. From 1999 he performs research in the fields of sensor and instrumentation at the DIEEI of the University of Catania.

RESEARCH ACTIVITY

Bruno Andò leads a group of researchers working in the following fields:

Smart Sensing Systems and Readout Electronics;
Assistive Technologies;
Nano and Micro Sensors, µ-fluidics, Bio-Sensors;
Inkjet Printed Sensors and Flexible Sensors;
Sensors exploiting innovative materials (ferrofluids, ferroelectrics and multiferroics);
Sensor Networks;
Smart signal processing and nonlinear techniques (including stochastic resonance and dithering) to improve performances of sensors and bio-receptors.

ACHIEVEMENTS IN SCIENTIFIC SOCIETIES

Since 1997 he is member of IEEE, and since 2013 he is a Senior Member of IEEE.
He is the Chair Elected of the IEEE SAS Advisory Board, 2017-2019.
He belongs to the following Technical Committee of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society: TC-18 “Environmental Measurements”, TC-37 “Measurement and Networking” and TC-13 “Wireless & Telecommunications in Measurements”.
He is a member of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurements Faculty Course Development Award Committee for years 2016, 2017.
Since 2010 he is a member of the AitAAL (Italian Association on Ambient Assisted Living) and since 2004 he is a member of the Italian Group of Electric and Electronic Measurement “GMEE”, Italy.
Since 2015 he is the Chairman of the National Research Activity on “Sensors and Transducers for Measurement” of the Italian Measurement Group (GMEE).
He is delegated of the “Sicily (Italy) District on Micro&Nano Systems”, to the Italian Cluster on “Technology for Life Environments (TAV)”, as an expert in the field of "Technology for Assisted Living".
He belongs to the List of supporters of AALOA (AAL OPEN ASSOCIATION-www.aaloa.org/).
In 2011, 2013 he was with the Technical Program Committee of “EvAAL (Evaluating AAL Systems through Competitive Benchmarking)” competition organized by AALOpenAssociation on “Indoor Localization”, Valencia.

J. M. Dias Pereira (M’00–SM’04) was born in Portugal in 1959. He received is degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL) in 1982.

In 1995 he received the MSc degree, in 1999 the PhD degree and in 2008 the Aggregation, all degrees are included in the area of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

His professional experience includes the following positions: from 1984 till 1986 he developed activities in Control Data as a field engineer in the area of mechanical and electrical tests of magnetic heads and storage disk drives, Control Data, during this period we stayed almost six months in U.S.A. (Control Data factory in Aberdeen); from 1986 till 1987 he worked as a an engineer head of digital transmission of Lisbon and Porto Telecommunications Company; from 1987 till 1992 he worked an engineer head of installation and maintenance of digital switching and transmission systems of the Portuguese Telecommunications Company. During this period he was in charge of all engineering services developing all the required activities to install and interface the new digital switching exchanges with the analog ones.

He has published over 200 articles in engineering journals and proceedings, has three patents, and he published one book and three chapters in instrumentation and measurement areas.

His main areas of expertise include industrial instrumentation, environmental measurements, A/D and D/A conversions, and digital signal processing techniques based on ANNs and FNNs.
